Recognizing the photographs taken at Smith should be easy: they are the ones on the “Pioneer blue” courts. Smith completed some facility upgrades during the winter break, the most dramatic of which were the eye-catching paint jobs on courts one and five.

Some of the top players on the participating teams will be back to the Pioneer Valley in early March when Amherst hosts the Individual Championships.

Hosts Wesleyan made the most of the event going 5-1. They defeated Colby, Colgate, Smith, Tufts, and William Smith and lost to Brown. They edged Colby by a 5-4 margin.

Brown went undefeated in the round robin. Their toughest match of the weekend was against Mount Holyoke.

Below are photos from a few of the men’s matches at the scrimmages.  Yale, last season’s Ivy League champion, have not lost a regular season Ivy League match since January 2009.  Each season brings new possibilities and Harvard appears ready to take control of the Ivy League. The Crimson defeated Penn and Princeton to make it to the finals against Yale.  Harvard defeated to Bulldogs to capture the tournament. Yet a preseason event is just a preseason event. The February 12th match between the two schools could have serious Ivy League and Potter Cup implications.

Columbia, which will play its first full season of Ivy League competition this year, finished the tournament in eighth place after a narrow 4-5 loss to Brown.

To set up the semifinal match, Kenyon defeated Boston College, 5-4, while Vanderbilt defeated Haverford, 6-3.

In the semifinal match, the match at the number 9 position was between Kenyon’s Robert Mueller and Vanderbilt’s Bret Van Den Hooff.  The two played a close first game with Van Den Hoof escaping with a 11-9 victory. He went on to win the final two games, capturing the match in three games (11-9,11-3, 11-7).

Vanderbilt defeated Kenyon, 5-4. They went on to win the Chaffee Cup against MIT. Kenyon defeated California to finish 3rd in the bracket.

The United States team was composed of current Professional Squash Association members Julian Illingworth,  Gilly Lane, and Chris Gordon, as well as current college squash player Todd Harrity (Princeton).

The team is filled with decorated College Squash Association players. Illingworth, the seven-time U.S. Champion, was a four-time All-American (2002 – 2006) while at Yale. Penn alum Lane, the 2007 Skillman Award winner, also earned four All-American distinctions. Harrity, the reigning Pool Trophy (men’s individual champion) winner, is a two-time All-American. This fall, he will be entering his junior year at Princeton.

In addition to players, the team has CSA coaches. Gordon has served as an assistant coach at Trinity College since 2008.  The team was supposed to be coached by Chris Walker; however, due to injury,  Paul Assaiante, the head men’s squash coach at Trinity College, led the team in Germany. Assaiante’s Trinity team’s current win streak stands at 224. The assistant coach, Gareth Webber, recently left his assistant coaching position at Yale University to take over as the Olympic Club (California) professional.

Seeded 8th going into the tournament, the United States team played very well. They defeated the Ukraine and Switzerland and lost to 9th seed Italy in Pool play. Unfortunately, Lane was injured in Pool play.

In the opening round, the United States faced northern neighbor Canada, who was seeded 7th. In 64 minutes, long-time rivals Shahier Razik (Canada) and Illingworth battled. Assaiante told DailySquashReport.com that “Julian really had the weight of the world on his shoulders in the toughest type of match. One that you think you should win.” Illingworth won in five games to capture the match for the United States.

Egypt defeated the United States in the quarterfinals, but the match proved valuable experience for team USA.  In the 5th – 8th playoffs, the US lost to Malaysia, but beat India for 7th place overall. Against India, Harrity won a five-game match.

Carolyn Tilney, a senior, helped Brown capture the Kurtz Cup (“B” Division) at the 2011 Women’s College Squash National Team Championships (Howe Cup). Against George Washington, she won in five games to clinch the cup.

In her sophomore campaign, Tempest Bowden, Mount Holyoke’s number 5, went 15 – 8.  Like Tilney, Bowden had a successful Howe Cup and went undefeated in the tournament. She helped the Lyons upset Middlebury in the opening round.

In the individual championships, Tilney and Bowden played a four-game match.  Tilney won the match 4-11, 11-7, 11-4, and 11-9.

The match between Leanza and Mullaney was a tale of two players at opposite ends of their college squash careers.  Mullaney, a first-year, had an impressive opening campaign. He played at the number 7 position for the majority of the season and had a record of 12-5.  Leanza, a senior, played number 1 for Brown. He concluded the season with 9-10 record and was a finalist for the 2011 Skillman Award.

In the Molloy Cup, the two players battled back and forth in games and points that lasted forever. Despite losing the first two games, Leanza remained motivated. He came back and won the final three games to advance to the round of 16 (11-13, 8-11, 11-1, 11-3, and 11-9).

In the match at the number 2 position, Sarah Crosky (Brown) played Kelly Barnes (George Washington). For the season, Barnes, a first-year student, went 13-7. Crosky, a sophomore, went undefeated during the 2011 Howe Cup, including a 3-0 victory over Barnes (11-7, 11-2, and 11-8).

Brown defeated George Washington 9-0. Brown went on to defeat Bates and Williams to capture the Kurtz Cup and a season ending ranking of 9th. George Washington lost to Amherst and defeated Columbia to finish 15th in the nation.
