The Richey Award is one of the highest individual honors in women’s college squash. Named for Hall of Fame coach Betty Richey, the award is given to the player who best exemplifies the ideals of squash in her performance, sportsmanship, and leadership. Candidates are evaluated on their on-court poise and demeanor, skill level and ability, team play, contributions to intercollegiate squash, leadership, and their cooperation with players, coaches, and tournament officials

A three-time All-American, Aziz finished the season ranked 9th in the nation, garnering 2009-2010 All-Ivy honors along the way. She never finished out of the top 25 in her four years of collegiate play.

As senior captain, Aziz led the Bulldogs to a 4th-place finish at the 2010 Women’s National Team Championships (Howe Cup). She played at number 2 and number 3 throughout the season and finished with a 13-4 overall record. Four of those victories were five-game wins, reflecting her tenacious style of play. She also volunteered with Squash Haven, an enrichment program for New Haven youth, during her time at Yale.

Aziz was presented with the Richey Award at this year’s Howe Cup, which was held at Yale. Friends and family cheered her on as she accepted the award. Aziz is the fifth Yale player to win the Richey Award in the last six years.

Aziz is a native of New York, NY, and she played squash at Groton. Her twin brother Sharyar also played squash for Yale.

New Haven, CT — The College Squash Association has made an effort to recognize teams that consistently uphold high standards of conscientious, respectful play. Since 1981, the men’s College Squash Association has presented an award for team sportsmanship. This award was renamed in honor of former Williams and Haverford head coach Sean Sloane in 2005.

The 2010 Sloane Award was presented to the Hamilton College Continentals, who are coached by Jamie King. This is the second time in three years Hamilton has won the Sloane Award. When Hamilton won in 2008, King became the first individual to win the Sloane Award as a player and a coach. He played for Sloane at Williams when the Ephs won the 1984 sportsmanship award.

The 2009-2010 Continentals were recognized by their peers for embodying the following ideals of sportsmanship: “a sense of esprit de corps, of sportsmanship, of hard but fair play, of being gracious in victory and defeat, and enjoying the camaraderie and pride of being part of a team.”

Hamilton finished the season ranked 21st in the nation, winning the consolation bracket of the Summers Cup (“C” Division). The Continentals went 11-15 on the season, notching four 5-4 wins along the way, including their final win of the season against Stanford.

The Continentals were led by five seniors: Perrin Van Allen, George Whitely, and tri-captains Brett Morell, Jono Peters, and Mario Magana, who was named to the 2010 NESCAC All-Sportsmanship team. Magana, Morell, and Peters as well as junior James Hogan were all on the Hamilton team that won the Sloane Award in 2008.

Mahan, who was also named the 2010 NESCAC co-Player of the Year, compiled an 18-9 record this season playing number 1 for the Bobcats. Along the way, he notched a number of impressive wins, including a five-game win over Trinity’s Supreet Singh. Mahan finished the season ranked 28th in the nation as an individual and amassed a 61-25 career record at Bates.

A two-time First Team All-NESCAC selection, Mahan was also named to NESCAC’s All-Academic Team as well as Bates’ Scholar-Athlete Society.

Mahan also made substantial contributions to his team as a leader, notes Bobcats head coach Pat Cosquer. “I am most proud that he successfully led the men’s team to a 12th-place finish as an extremely effective captain this past season,” says Cosquer. “He has matured into a wonderful young man, and I am proud to have played a role in his development, both on and off the court.”

Mahan has stayed active in squash since graduating from Bates. He recently competed in a US Pro Squash Tournament in Natick, MA, and he will represent his birth country, Kenya, in the Commonwealth Games later this year.

Congratulations to Kush!

Melbourne, Australia — Team USA squeezed out a 2-1 victory over Canada to win bronze at the 2010 World University Games.

Kristen Lange led us off with a win over defending intercollegiate
champion Laura Gemmell of Harvard (11-3, 12-10, 6-11, 11-4).

In the second round, Todd Harrity faced Canada’s Colin West, who had recently defeated him to win the intercollegiates. West continued his control with a hard fought 11-8, 7-11, 5-11, 3-11 victory.

In the third match, Chris Hanson played against Fred Reid, who showed incredible mastery of the ball in the cold courts. Chris found himself down 2-1 by the scores of 11-9, 10-12, 9-11. In the fourth game it appeared that Fred decided to save his energy for the fifth game by going for a bit of a walk about. Game to Chris 11-1. Fred came out firing on all cylinders in the fifth but Chris held him off to win 11-9.

I told the team how proud I was of them as all of the officials complimented them for their court behavior, and I also told them that the bronze was a great accomplishment.

We will be taken to an Australian rules football game tonight and then the 23-hour journey home.

Go USA!

Melbourne, Australia — The final four teams of the 2010 World University Squash Games are battling for the team championship. The team event features teams of three, two men and one woman.

The team event was broken into Pool A and Pool B. The final Pool A standings were as follows: 1. Great Britain, 2. Canada, 3. South Africa, and 4. Singapore.

The United States competed in Pool B. Yesterday, USA coach Paul Assaiante discussed the United States’ success in the first two rounds of the team competition. The squad defeated Australia and Austria. The final Pool B standings were as follows: 1. Hong Kong, 2. USA, 3. Australia, and 4. Austria.

The top two teams from each pool are competing for the top spots in the team event.

The United States faced top-seeded Great Britain in the semifinals. Chris Hanson (Dartmouth) played number one for the United States and lost to 2010 World University Squash Games’ individual champion Joel Hind. Hanson’s teammates, Alex Domenick and Logan Greer, also lost.

In the other semifinal, Hong Kong faced Canada. Hong Kong’s Au siblings, Leo and Annie, were too much for Colin West (Harvard) and Laura Gemmell (Harvard).

Great Britain and Hong Kong will square off for the team championship. Canada and the United States will play for third. There is a good possibility that Canada’s Colin West (Harvard) and the United States’ Todd Harrity (Princeton) will have a rematch of the 2010 Pool Trophy. In addition, it is possible for Canada’s Laura Gemmell (Harvard), the 2010 Ramsay Cup winner, to either have a rematch with her Ramsay Cup semifinal opponent Logan Greer (Yale) or her 2010 Howe Cup finals opponent Kristen Lange (Penn).

Melbourne, Australia — Today was an epic day for US squash.

In the team championships, our side beat Austria 3-0. Logan Greer started us off with a strong 3-1 victory. Todd Harrity then came up against a very dangerous young player and won in 3 tight and risky games. Chris Hanson won the rubber match 3-0 comfortably.

Tonight we went up against host Australia, coached by five-time world
champion Sara Fitzgerald. Kristen Lange lost 3-0 and all of a sudden the pressure was on. Todd Harrity was in much better form, winning 3-0.

Chris Hanson then came out to play the number two from Australia, Luke Sims. Sims hit the ball very hard and had Chris on his heels throughout. At 9-9 in the first game Chris cut his knee and took the injury time out to get it covered, quickly winning the game 11-9. In game two, Sims came out blasting, winning 11-6, but in game three, Chris showed great grit, winning 11-7. Although Sims seemed to be fading, he somehow found a second wind and stole the fourth game 11-6.

All of a sudden the pressure was squarely on Chris’s shoulders for us to have a chance for a medal, and he found himself down 7-4. Chris then dug deep, and after several gut-busting points he came out on top, winning the fifth game 11-7.

We play Hong Kong tomorrow (the number two seed), and then the cross-over match tomorrow afternoon.

Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melbourne, Australia — The individuals ended today with great success for the US team.

In the first match of the day, Alex Domenick lost an exciting five-gamer to the number one Australian player, thus finishing 14th.

Kristen Lange and Logan Greer both went on court at 1 pm. Kristen beat the number two from Hong Kong in straight games to finish 5th. Logan then beat the South African number one in a decisive 3-0 win to finish 7th.

Chris Hanson beat the very deceptive number one from Singapore in four games to finish 9th. Todd Harrity then upset the number one player from Hong Kong to bring the bronze medal home to the USA!!!!!!

Tomorrow we begin the team event and start off in the morning versus Austria and then in the afternoon against the host Australians.

The team really has its sights set on a medal, and we hope to play well enough to do so.

Editor’s note: Laura Gemmell, who is playing for Canada, finished 13th. Colin West, who is also representing Canada, finished 5th. The women’s individual title was won by Wing Chi Annie Au of Hong Kong, with Great Britain’s Emma Chorley finishing second. Joel Hinds of Great Britain won the men’s title, and Jens Schoor of Germany finished second.
