New Haven, CT — Teams brought energy, intensity, and competitive fire to the Day 2 morning matches.
A Division (Potter Cup): The Potter Cup semifinal between Yale and Trinity went off at 11:30 am. Intros for the the Princeton-Harvard semifinal began at noon.
B Division (Hoehn Cup): It may have been the consolations, but the competition was no less fierce among Hoehn Cup teams. Bates and Navy were tied 3-all going into the final round of matches. Ahmed Abdel Khalek’s win over Navy’s Andrew McGuinness gave Bates the 4-3 edge. Navy’s John Richey won 13-11 in the fifth over Filip Michalsky to tie up the match. In the number 4 contest, Bates’ R. J. Keating went out to a 2-0 lead, but Hunter Bouchard dug in to win 11-9 in the third. Keating held off a late charge from Bouchard in the fourth to clinch the 5-4 win for the Bobcats. In the Penn-Brown match, the Quakers’ Mike Mutscheller and the Bears’ Chris Holter played a marathon five-game match at number 5. The two players dueled for well over an hour, and the match came down to the final points, with Mutscheller outlasting Holter 11-9 in the fifth. Penn clinched the win before the final round was done, but the matches stayed close even after the overall score had been decided.
C Division (Summers Cup): The C Division semifinals are scheduled for 2 pm today.
D Division (Conroy Cup): The first D Division semifinal was set to go off at noon.
E Division: (Chaffee Cup): Last week, the Virginia women knocked top-seeded BC out of the D Division semifinals. This weekend saw another BC-Virginia match-up, but with a different result. This time around, the top-seeded Eagles soared into the E Division finals with a 6-3 win over the Cavaliers.
F Division (Serues Cup): USC rebounded from yesterday’s loss to NYU with a decisive 6-2 win over Fordham. The semifinal matches between NYU and Northeastern and between Lehigh and Northwestern are scheduled for this afternoon.
G Division (Hawthorn Cup): Cal looked strong in their opening match of the tournament, sending Minnesota to the consolation round robin with an 8-1 win. In the round robin, Notre Dame defeated Illinois Springfield, 8-1, while Vassar claimed 6 matches to Siena’s 3, giving the Brewers the 6-3 win.
