Charlottesville, VA — The big news for the Cavaliers is that last spring the University of Virginia announced the construction of a 33,000-foot new squash facility made possible by a gift from the Quantitative Foundation. The recently established Friends of Virginia Squash will also help provide the program with administrative and financial support. The substantial investment in the program is exciting news for Virginia squash as well as the college squash community in general. However, it’s not the only good news. Though the construction isn’t finished, the players have already received a boost. “The UVA women have been working hard in the off season and are hoping that the effort will pay dividends in the coming season,” says coach Grant White. “Their goals for 2012-2013 are simple: create a solid foundation with improved practice habits, then build a legacy of success and sportsmanship upon that foundation.” During the season, the Cavaliers will head north for a round robin at Smith College, where they’ve found good competition in the past. Johns Hopkins will also be a key match; last season, Virginia’s 5-4 win over the Blue Jays put them into the D Division, and they expect another close match this year.
