Boston, MA — The second day of the 2012 Women’s National Team Championships is almost over, and there were several upsets in the afternoon.
Howe Cup (A Division): Harvard and Yale advanced to the Howe Cup finals earlier in the day.
Even though play in the main draw was over for the day, Stanford and Cornell kept the A Division exciting. With the match tied 4-all, Cornell’s Danielle Letourneau went up 2-0 against Stanford’s Pamela Chua at #1. Chua, however, wasn’t done: she won the third game and held on to win 11-9 in the fourth. The team match came down to the fifth and final game, and Letourneau roared back, sealing the win for the Big Red. Her teammates swarmed around her as she came off the court, laughing and cheering. Cornell will face Penn tomorrow in the fifth place playoff match. Stanford will play Dartmouth for seventh place.
Kurtz Cup (B Division): The 2012 Kurtz Cup final will be a rematch of the 2011 final, as Williams and Brown will play again for the B Division title.
Williams, the twelfth seed in the tournament overall, upset ninth-seeded Middlebury to advance to the Kurtz Cup final. Middlebury led after the first round thanks to wins from Anne Ulrich at #9 and Charlotte Dewey at #3. In the #6 match, Amanda Chen won the fourth game 12-10 to force a fifth game against Caroline Sawin, looking to make a clean sweep of the first round for Middlebury. But Sawin came back strong to take the fifth 11-4, giving Williams their first win.
In the next round, Carolyn Kaemmer (#8) and Ellie O’Neill (#5) won for Williams, and Abigail Jenkins (#2) won for Middlebury. The match was tied 3-all going into the final round. All three of the final round matches went past three games. Ephs Courtney Bogle (#1) and Alyssa Northrup (#4) both won in four, and Hannah Kaemmer came back from 0-2 to win 11-9 in the fifth at #7 to complete a Williams trifecta in the final round. The final match score was Williams 6, Middlebury 3.
It was clear from the first round that the Brown-Bates match would be close. Kathryn Yates won in three for Brown at #9, but the other matches were much closer. At #3, Bates’ Myriam Kelly and Brown’s Sarah Crosky played a close four-gamer, with two matches going to tie-breakers; Kelly took the win for the Bobcats. The #6 match between Chloe Mitchell (Bates) and Lydia Smith (Brown) went to five, and Smith won 11-5 in the fifth.
In the second round, Sarah Domenick won in three at #2 for Brown. Bates picked up two dramatic five-game wins from Rakey Drammeh at #5 and Lesea Bourke at #8. In the final round, the Bobcats picked up one more win from Nessrine Ariffin at #1, but Mina Shakarshy’s (#4) and Erika Kohnen’s (#7) victories tipped the scales in the Bears’ favor. The final match score was Brown 5, Bates 4.
In the consolation bracket, Mount Holyoke defeated Hamilton 6-3 to move into the consolation finals, where they will face Columbia.
