Northampton, MA — For the week ending 1/24/2011, Elizabeth Guyman (Smith College) has been named the women’s Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week, while Allan Lutz (Naval Academy) has been named the men’s Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week.
A Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players by contacting Michael T. Bello. Nominations are due each Monday by 6 PM ET.
After one of the busiest weekends of the college squash season, there were many athletes who had strong performances. Special mention goes to Trinity’s Vikram Malhotra, who had wins over Chris Hanson of Dartmouth, Hywel Robinson of Yale, and Gabriel de Melo of F&M.
Elizabeth Guyman (Smith College): Because of a wrist injury, Guyman played left-handed for over two weeks, challenging her way up to #6 on the Smith ladder and competing in several matches left-handed. This week, after being medically cleared to play with her right hand, Guyman earned one of Smith’s two wins against Northeastern. A two-year captain, Guyman consistently demonstrates great sportsmanship and competent marking and refereeing skills.
Allan Lutz (Naval Academy): Playing number 1 for the Midshipmen, Lutz went 4-1 over an eight-day stretch. He defeated William Morris of Williams, Harry Smith of Colby, West Hubbard of MIT, and Graham Miao of Columbia. Lutz’s sole loss was to Kenneth Chan of Yale, who is ranked eighth in the nation as an individual player. Lutz has now tied Nils Mattsson for the most career wins of any Navy player: 90.
